Catuaba Testimony
Catuaba - a natural nootropic, sexual enhancer and possibly weight loss help
I recently bought a bag of catuaba bark when ordering some kratom and found that although it is mentioned here and there, there is no comprehensive text about the effects, administration, dose and properties of this ethnobotanical on this forum.
Since i like this stuff a lot, i think it deserves its own thread and a writeup that covers the above things.
So, what is catuaba? Catuaba is the bark and / or root of one of various plants found in Brazil, most prominently Trichilia catigua and Anemopaegma arvense. Its psychoactive ingredients are a number of tropane alkaloids known as catuabines.
In Brazil, catuaba is said to be invigorating, promoting mental alertness, good mood, and improvements in sexuality in both men and women, and a remedy for gastrointestinal problems. It is used as an infusion or tincture. It has been found to be vasodilating, and thus can help men with achieving harder and bigger erections much in the same way as Viagra (but is not as strong).
How is it administered and dosed? When taken as an infusion, one heaped teaspoon is steeped for about ten minutes in hot (not boiling) water. Due to the various plants that may be used to produce catuaba, the amount that is steeped may vary, but the information i found consistently recommends one teaspoon.
When taken as a tincture, it is simply swallowed, the amount swallowed being dependent on the strength of the tincture, but usually one teaspoon is sufficient.
My experience with catuaba:
Although i do not suffer from any sexual dysfunction, stimulants such as amphetamine have caused me a fair bit of frustration regarding sexuality as they both make me horny and decrease my ability to maintain an erection. So the main reason i wanted to try this was to see if it could be used to counteract the stim dick, but i have found it to be useful in other ways as well.
I usually made my infusion as described above, but have experimented as well. The infusion has a bitter, but not unpleasant taste that reminded me a bit of valerian root extract. The effects (and side effects) become apparent almost immediately after drinking the infusion and last for about 4 hours, with the peak occurring about twenty to thirty minutes after ingestion. It gave me a warm body feeling and made me sweat a bit. I would feel awake, similar to the feeling some caffeine would provide, but with notably more mood improvement (still no euphoria). Taking a higher dose does not improve those effects, but quite reliably causes a slight headache.
As for sexuality, when taken alone it would improve sexual pleasure, but cause no notable improvements in erection (but neither do i have the need for that.) When taken while under the influence of amphetamine, it would significantly improve my ability to maintain an erection. I was really happy about that! I can't tell if it also increased my sexual pleasure, since amphetamine already does that in a much stronger way. So, a nice, natural and easy to get remedy for the feared stim dick .
But the mental effects are nothing to be scoffed at either. Not only did it make me feel awake, it also improved my ability to think and concentrate. In this respect, it is quite comparable to the Noopept i have experimented with in the past. Unlike the caffeine i have compared it with earlier, it does not cause the heart to beat faster and is generally much calmer in its effects. I can't really recommend combining it with caffeine as i found its positive effects are much more noticeable when taken alone.
A neutral effect that can be good or bad depending on the person is that it noticeably reduces hunger and appetite. So i can recommend it to people* who want to eat less, but are plagued with hunger and food cravings.
The only side effects i found were the headache when dosed too high and the sweating (which, along with the feeling of warmth, is not necessarily disagreeable).
Using a higher dose but steeping it for a shorter amount of time makes the infusion taste less bitter while retaining the same effects, so you can save time and have a tastier infusion if you are willing to be a bit wasteful. I didn't mind the bitter taste much and like to wait for it to cool down, so i only tried that once or twice.
So in conclusion i have enjoyed this ethnobotanical thoroughly. It may not be something to have fun with, but its effects are nice in daily life, work and sex. It has almost replaced my usual cup of Earl Grey tea in the morning, and isn't more expensive either.
So, i am open for questions and hope you have more information to contribute.
*By that, i mean people who usually overeat. For people who eat normally, eating less is not a good way to lose weight permanently.
